Description: Originally published in 1923, this documents the work of the famous Philadelphia-based firm which designed many outstanding residences in Mid-Atlantic and New England states. Using English, French, and Italian traditions they created beautiful country estates, suburban homes, townhouses and other structures as well as superb gardens. Through these 308 photographs and measured drawings one can discover the joys that superior residential design can offer.

Walter Mellor and Arthur Ingersoll Meigs started their architecture firm in Philadelphia in 1906. George Howe joined them in 1914. In 1929, George Howe left the firm to "become a priest of the modern faith", and won fame as an architect of the modern style.
